How Long Does It Take to Paint the Inside of a House?

The honest answer is that it depends on size, condition and whether the space is occupied, but there are realistic ranges worth knowing before you book a project so the schedule you are given makes sense.

Single room timeline

A single average-sized room with minimal repairs usually runs one to two days: prep and a first coat on one day, a second coat and trim on the next. A small room with no repairs can sometimes be finished in one day; a room with significant plaster or drywall repair, or a dramatic color change that needs extra coverage, can run closer to three.

Full interior timeline

A full interior repaint – walls, ceilings and trim throughout a typical Chicago house, condo or apartment – generally runs three to seven days, depending on square footage, ceiling height, and how much of the trim and plaster needs attention. Larger homes, or ones with extensive millwork and staircases, run toward the longer end regardless of square footage, since detailed trim takes real time by hand.

What speeds it up

An empty or mostly-empty property is the single biggest factor: nothing to move, protect, or work around. A consistent color scheme through the whole space also helps, since we are not stopping to re-mask and re-cut for a different wall color in every room. Good access – working elevators, available parking, no scheduling conflicts with other trades – keeps crews working rather than waiting.

What slows it down

Occupied homes take longer, because furniture has to be moved and protected room by room rather than cleared all at once. Extensive plaster repair, heavy trim de-glossing, and humid weather that slows dry time between coats all add real days. In occupied condo and apartment buildings, we also work around the building’s own access hours and shared-area protection requirements, which we account for in the schedule from the start rather than discovering mid-project.

Most bedrooms and living rooms take one to two days for a professional crew, including preparation, two coats and cleanup. Rooms with a lot of repair, dark colors or detailed trim can take longer.

A full interior typically takes three to seven working days for an average home, depending on its size, ceiling heights, the amount of trim and how much preparation the surfaces need.

Yes. Most interior painting is done in occupied homes, working room by room with low-odor paints so the house stays usable.

Plaster and drywall repair, color changes from dark to light, high ceilings and stairwells, detailed trim and a lot of furniture to move all add time.
